Chariots were among the most prestigious and visually impressive elements of the Assyrian army. Drawn by teams of horses and carrying heavily armed crews, they served as mobile fighting platforms on open ground, supporting the infantry and cavalry with speed, shock and missile fire. Assyrian kings were also frequently shown riding in chariots during military campaigns, ceremonial processions and royal hunts, making the chariot an important symbol of royal power as well as a weapon of war. By the height of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, chariots formed part of a large professional army that also included cavalry and many different types of infantry.
This set provides Assyrian chariots with horse teams and a selection of crew figures, including warriors, shield bearers and a royal figure. An alternative head is included for the king, together with a ceremonial parasol, allowing the model to be used in a royal or command setting. The multi-part construction provides considerable detail and permits the modeller to create an impressive centrepiece for an Assyrian army. The chariots may be combined with sets 8092 Assyrian Infantry, 8121 Assyrian Allied/Auxiliary Infantry and 8125 Assyrian Cavalry to build a more complete Assyrian force.
