In the Napoleonic Wars, the Austrian artillery arm enjoyed a strong reputation for professionalism and technical skill, and its cavalry artillery, (more usually called horse artillery) provided the fast-moving gun support needed by the army’s mounted forces. Unlike ordinary foot artillery, horse artillery crews were trained and equipped to move rapidly with the cavalry, bringing light guns quickly into action where they could support an attack, cover a withdrawal or strengthen a threatened part of the battlefield. In the great campaigns against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, Austrian horse artillery served alongside the cavalry reserve and added welcome mobility to the Habsburg army's firepower.
Box front and back
This set represents these Austrian cavalry artillerymen in action with their gun, an arm that is less often modelled than infantry or cavalry, yet was an important part of Napoleonic battlefields. Its figures and equipment make an ideal companion to Austrian cavalry and line artillery sets, and allow the modeller to represent the more mobile side of the Austrian gun arm.
